Police in Michigan continue their investigation into the homicide of Mia Kanu, Southfield Police Department’s Deputy Chief of Police told CrimeSpace.

“The investigation is still active.” Deputy Chief of Police Aaron Huguley told CrimeSpace. “As additional information becomes available, we will release it to our local media partners.”

Mia Kanu, a veterinary student from Tennessee State University, was discovered unconscious on Southfield’s Providence Drive, approximately 15 miles northwest of Detroit, Michigan, CrimeSpace previously reported.

Following a night out with her friends, she was left stranded on the side of the road. An acquired surveillance video by the police revealed the 23-year-old being separated from a car, but it was uncertain whether she fell or was forced out.

Mia’s mother, Bianca Vanmeter, has been left perplexed and heartbroken, seeking answers about her daughter’s tragic demise, according to Atlanta Black Star.

She questions why Mia’s friends did not dial 911 for assistance. Mia was transported to the Ascension Providence Hospital and pronounced dead on June 5. She remained on life support until June 8 due to her status as an organ donor.

As CrimeSpace previously reported, police are treating her death as a homicide, as they are still uncertain whether Mia was pushed or fell from the vehicle. The authorities have also stated that Mia endured “significant head trauma” before her death.

Bianca Vanmeter is the mother of the late Mia Kanu, who met a mysterious end after an evening out with friends in Michigan. Following her daughter’s untimely death, the bereaved mother shared a video on Facebook, capturing Mia being transported for organ donation.

Vanmeter recounts last seeing Mia alive on the morning of June 2 before she headed to work. She further mentions that a female friend fetched Mia from her workplace at the Green Lantern in Berkley, before heading off to the house party.

Vanmeter revealed that the same vehicle used for picking up Mia from her job was spotted in the unreleased surveillance footage. While seeking the truth behind her daughter’s tragic death, Vanmeter confided to Fox 2 Detroit, “Something happened and somebody knows something, and we just want those answers. If they could just tell the true story of what happened and why they didn’t go back for her, why they didn’t help her more. I would really want to know that.”

Vanmeter further said, as quoted by the Atlanta Black Star, “She was with her friends, and from my understanding, she was thrown out or fell out of a vehicle. She was found on the side of the road, and she was left there. I want to know what really happened and if they were with friends, why wouldn’t they call 911?” In her last moments, Mia’s organs were donated, including her liver to an infant, her kidneys to a recipient, and her tissues and muscles to the Gift of Life. Vanmeter poignantly remembers her daughter as “a beautiful angel laying in bed”.

In the aftermath of Mia’s death, Vanmeter has initiated a GoFundMe campaign titled “In loving memory of Mia,” with the aim of funding Mia’s funeral and memorial. The page lovingly remembers Mia as a wonderful daughter, sister, niece, cousin, and friend who influenced the lives of those around her.

Her life, devoted to her family and friends, was cut short. Her dreams of becoming a veterinarian remained unfulfilled. The family shares their grief over their devastating loss.

Vanmeter, in the fundraising campaign, appreciates the massive support they’ve received and thanks everyone for their generous contributions during this challenging time.
